What are Pad Flanges?

Pad flanges are specialized flanges designed to provide reinforcement and support where a branch connection meets a main pipe. They are used in high-pressure and high-temperature piping systems to ensure leak-free, structurally sound connections. In process engineering, pad flanges improve both safety and long-term reliability.

How Pad Flanges Work

Pad flanges act as reinforcement by increasing the wall thickness at the connection point. This helps manage internal pressure and mechanical loads while maintaining alignment between components. In some cases, they are used alongside weld neck flanges or o’lets to form secure, reinforced branch connections.

Proper installation of pad flanges reduces stress concentrations and extends the service life of the piping system.

Common Applications

Pad flanges are widely used in:

  • Oil and gas pipelines

  • Chemical processing facilities

  • Power generation systems

  • High-pressure steam networks

  • Refineries and offshore platforms

These applications require both structural strength and pressure containment, which pad flanges provide effectively.

Benefits of Using Pad Flanges

  • Reinforces branch connections for safety and strength

  • Reduces risk of weld fatigue or cracking

  • Distributes pressure evenly

  • Compatible with industry standards like ASME B31.3

  • Suitable for both new construction and retrofits
