What Is Absorption Factor? | Process Engineering Glossary
What Is Absorption Factor?
The absorption factor is a dimensionless ratio used in gas absorption column design that compares the actual liquid-to-gas flow ratio to the ratio that would be in equilibrium with the gas at the operating conditions. It is defined as A = L / (m × V), where L is the liquid molar flow rate, V is the gas molar flow rate, and m is the slope of the equilibrium line relating gas and liquid phase compositions.
An absorption factor greater than 1 indicates the liquid rate is more than sufficient to absorb the target component at equilibrium, while a factor at or below 1 means the column will struggle to achieve high recovery no matter how many stages are added.
Applications of Absorption Factor
Absorption Column Design
Absorption factor is a central variable in sizing gas absorption columns, since it directly relates to how many theoretical stages are needed to achieve a target recovery of the absorbed component from the gas stream.
Stripping Operations Comparison
The related stripping factor, essentially the inverse concept applied to stripping columns, is evaluated alongside absorption factor when a process involves both absorption and stripping steps, such as solvent regeneration.
Solvent Selection
Comparing achievable absorption factors across candidate solvents at a given liquid rate helps identify which solvent will deliver adequate recovery without requiring an impractically tall column.
Benefits of Knowing Absorption Factor
Simplifies stage requirement estimation. Once absorption factor is known, established graphical and analytical methods can quickly estimate the number of theoretical stages needed for a target recovery.
Clarifies solvent and liquid rate trade-offs. Understanding how absorption factor responds to changes in liquid rate helps identify the most economical operating point between liquid rate and column height.
Flags fundamentally infeasible designs early. An absorption factor at or below 1 signals that no reasonable number of stages will achieve high recovery, catching a fundamentally infeasible design before detailed column sizing begins.
Limitations to Consider
Assumes a linear equilibrium relationship. The simple absorption factor calculation assumes the equilibrium line is linear over the relevant concentration range, which may not hold for all systems, particularly at higher concentrations.
Doesn’t capture stage efficiency. Absorption factor calculations typically assume theoretical (ideal) stages, and real column stages achieve some fraction of theoretical performance, requiring a separate efficiency correction.
Sensitive to temperature and pressure changes. Since the equilibrium slope m depends on operating temperature and pressure, absorption factor calculated for one set of conditions doesn’t directly transfer to different operating conditions.
Absorption Factor FAQ
How does absorption factor relate to distillation and separation processes more broadly?
Absorption is one of several separation processes used in process engineering, and while distillation relies on relative volatility differences, absorption relies on the equilibrium relationship captured in the absorption factor between the gas and liquid phases.
Why does the Antoine equation matter for absorption factor calculations?
The equilibrium slope used in the absorption factor often depends on vapor pressure data described by the Antoine equation, particularly when the absorbed component’s volatility is a significant factor in the equilibrium relationship, similar to how bubble point calculations depend on the same underlying vapor pressure data.
How does absorption factor connect to a column’s overall mass and energy balance?
Confirming an adequate absorption factor is one input to a column’s overall mass balance, and the associated liquid rate and any solvent regeneration duty also feed into the surrounding energy balance, both grounded in the same underlying thermodynamics as an azeotropic distillation system evaluated for the same service.
