What Is Boilover?
Boilover is a violent eruption of hot oil and steam from a burning storage tank, occurring when a fire’s heat wave reaches a layer of water trapped beneath the burning oil, often from firefighting water or a naturally occurring water bottom in crude oil storage. When the descending heat wave reaches this water layer, it flashes to steam almost instantaneously, and the resulting rapid expansion violently ejects burning oil from the tank, sometimes over a substantial distance.
