What Is a Conventional (Direct Spring) Relief Valve?

A conventional relief valve, also called a direct spring relief valve, is the most basic relief valve design, using direct spring force to hold the valve closed until inlet pressure overcomes that spring force at the valve’s set pressure. Unlike a balanced bellows or pilot-operated design, a conventional relief valve’s opening and closing behavior is directly affected by pressure in the discharge system, since backpressure acts on the same side of the disc that the spring is trying to hold closed.

Because of this backpressure sensitivity, conventional relief valves are best suited to services where discharge-side backpressure is low and predictable, such as venting directly to atmosphere or a lightly loaded header, rather than complex shared header systems with significant variable backpressure.
