What Is a Distributed Control System (DCS)?
A distributed control system, commonly abbreviated DCS, is an integrated computer-based control platform that provides centralized monitoring and decentralized control of an entire process facility, distributing control processing across multiple controllers located near their respective field instruments while presenting a unified operator interface in a central control room. The DCS receives input signals from field transmitters, executes PID control algorithms and logic, sends output signals to final control elements, manages alarm notifications, and records process data, all within a single coordinated system architecture.
Modern DCS platforms support not only basic regulatory control but also advanced control strategies, batch sequence management, safety system integration, and asset management functions, making the DCS the operational nerve center of most process facilities.
