What Is Flash Point?
Flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor to form an ignitable mixture with air near its surface, in the presence of an ignition source. Flash point is one of the most fundamental properties used to classify flammable and combustible liquids, directly informing storage tank design category, handling precautions, and transportation regulations.
Flash point is distinct from autoignition temperature, which describes the temperature at which a substance ignites spontaneously without any external ignition source; flash point instead describes the minimum temperature at which ignition becomes possible if a spark or flame is present.
