What Is a Low-Low Level Trip?
A low-low level trip is an independent, safety-critical level switch or alarm set below the normal low-level alarm on a storage tank or vessel, configured to automatically trigger a protective shutdown action, such as stopping a discharge pump or closing an outlet valve, to prevent the tank from being emptied below a safe minimum level. Low-low level trips are commonly used to protect downstream pumps from running dry, which can cause cavitation damage, seal failure, or overheating.
Like a high-high level trip, the low-low level trip is typically the final automated layer in a broader, layered low-level alarm strategy, activating only if a normal low-level alarm doesn’t prompt sufficient corrective action beforehand.
