What Is Reflux Ratio?
Reflux ratio is the ratio of the liquid returned to the top of a distillation column, the reflux, to the liquid distillate withdrawn as product. It is expressed as R = L / D, where L is the reflux flow rate and D is the distillate flow rate, and it is one of the primary variables an engineer adjusts to control the separation achieved in a distillation column.
A higher reflux ratio generally improves product purity by giving the vapor and liquid streams more opportunity to exchange components as they pass each other on the column’s trays or packing, but it does so at the cost of higher reboiler duty and condenser load, since more liquid has to be vaporized and condensed to sustain the added internal traffic.
