What Is a Process Flow Diagram (PFD)?
A process flow diagram, commonly abbreviated PFD, is an engineering document that shows the overall process scheme at a high level, including major equipment items, principal process streams, key operating conditions such as temperatures, pressures, and flow rates, and the material and energy balances that define how the process transforms raw materials into products. The PFD establishes the fundamental process design before the detailed engineering captured on the P&ID adds every individual pipe, instrument, and valve needed for implementation.
PFDs are developed during the early stages of process design as part of establishing the process design basis, and they serve as the reference for all downstream engineering work by defining what the process does, how much material flows through each step, and what conditions each piece of equipment operates at.
Applications of Process Flow Diagram
Process Design Development
The PFD is the primary deliverable of process design, capturing the engineering decisions about reaction conditions, separation sequences, recycle streams, and utility requirements that define how the process works.
Material and Energy Balance Documentation
PFDs document the material balances and energy balances that quantify every stream in the process, providing the numerical foundation for all equipment sizing and utility calculations.
Capital Cost Estimation and Project Evaluation
PFDs and their associated equipment lists provide the basis for capital cost estimates and economic evaluations that determine whether a project proceeds to detailed engineering.
Benefits of Knowing Process Flow Diagram
Defines the process at the level needed for major design decisions. The PFD captures enough detail to evaluate process alternatives, size major equipment, and establish utility requirements without the complexity of a full P&ID.
Provides the foundation all other engineering builds on. Every P&ID, equipment specification, and control strategy ultimately traces back to the process scheme and operating conditions established on the PFD.

Limitations to Consider
PFDs don’t show implementation details. Individual piping connections, instrument details, valve specifications, and control logic are not shown on the PFD, requiring the P&ID for implementation-level information.
Material balance accuracy depends on design assumptions. PFD material balances reflect the design-case assumptions, and actual operating conditions may differ from these assumptions, affecting downstream equipment performance.
PFD changes must propagate to all dependent documents. Any change to the PFD potentially affects P&IDs, equipment specifications, and operating procedures, requiring systematic change management.
