What Is a Distillation Column?
A distillation column is a tall, cylindrical vessel used to separate a liquid mixture into its component fractions based on differences in volatility, with the more volatile components concentrating toward the top of the column and the less volatile components concentrating toward the bottom. The column provides intimate contact between rising vapor and descending liquid across multiple stages, typically provided by trays or structured packing, with each stage enriching the vapor in lighter components and the liquid in heavier components as they pass countercurrently.
Distillation columns are among the most energy-intensive equipment items in a process facility, with the reboiler at the bottom providing the heat duty that drives vaporization and the condenser at the top removing heat to condense the overhead vapor, making energy efficiency a major design and optimization focus.
