What Is a Reflux Drum?
A reflux drum is a vessel located at the top of a distillation column that receives the condensed overhead vapor from the column’s condenser. The reflux drum separates any non-condensable gas from the liquid, then splits the liquid between reflux, which is pumped back to the top of the column to maintain the desired separation, and distillate product, which is withdrawn as the column’s overhead product.
Reflux drum sizing accounts for adequate liquid holdup to buffer normal flow variations and provide operator response time during upsets, along with sufficient vapor space for proper disengagement of any entrained liquid or non-condensable gas. Horizontal drum orientation is common for this service, since it provides a favorable ratio of surface area to volume for both liquid settling and vapor space.

Distillation Column Overhead System Design
Reflux drums are a standard part of essentially every distillation column’s overhead system, providing the physical separation and liquid holdup needed to manage reflux and distillate flows reliably across normal operating swings.
