What Is Column Flooding?

Column flooding is an operating condition in a distillation or absorption column in which excessive vapor or liquid traffic exceeds the column’s hydraulic capacity, causing liquid to accumulate faster than it can drain, back up within the column, and severely disrupt normal vapor-liquid contact. Flooding typically shows up as a sharp, sudden increase in column pressure drop and a significant loss of separation efficiency.

Flooding represents a hard upper operating limit for a given column design, and operating too close to the flooding point, even without actually flooding, can already produce degraded separation performance as internal flow patterns become unstable.
